The Morality of Markets & Governance

As a first stab at trying to elucidate an alternate morality based on principle (not merely pragmatism) for critiquing Libertarian policies, I've tried to summarize my (our?) views on Markets and Governance. Here's a refined version.

The Morality of Markets & Governance
Draft 4, 3/9/2005

1. Purpose

a) Morality
The point of individual liberty is to promote public good
The point of public good is to promote individual liberty

b) Systems
The point of the Market to recognize individual good
The point of Governance to recognize public good

2.  Ideology

a) Complementarity
Democracy is applying the Market to Governance
Regulation is applying Governance to the Market

b) Exclusivity
Anarchists want the Market to do Governance
i.e., public good is subsumed by individual good
Communists want Governance to do the Market
i.e., individual good is subsumed by public good
